Quarantine-free air travel could return thanks to new Covid tests, government claims

Published on 20 November 2020

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps also claimed he was making good progress on slashing the 14-day travel quarantine period – which it’s understood ministers want to cut to 7 days soon after lockdown ends mirror

People in England could return to completely quarantine-free air travel thanks to new rapid Covid tests, the Tory Transport Secretary has claimed.

Grant Shapps suggested lateral flow tests being piloted across Liverpool, which gives results in less than an hour, could “ultimately” be used to remove self-isolation for Brits going abroad.

Rapid tests are still in their early stages and scientists have raised doubts about their use, with documents on one brand – Innova – saying they are designed to be carried out by trained lab staff.

The isolation period when returning to the UK may be reduced – and today Grant Shapps claims it could even be eliminated eventually

But Mr. Shapps told the Airport Operators Association conference the new type of test “gives us some hope”.

He added: “Ultimately it could open the way for non-quarantined air travel – and of course that is what we’d absolutely love to achieve.”

It comes as ministers hope they will slash the quarantine time for UK arrivals from 14 days to 7 days soon after lockdown ends on December 2.

Yet that plan has already been underway for months and still not found a solution.
